When creating process variants or dedicated process instances, it might be necessary to change names, descriptions, or other attributes of process elements that originate from a process module and are therefore read-only.

Examples are role names that need to be localized or work product names and descriptions that need adjustments or additions.

To achieve this, process modelers can use the “Overwrite” operation on a process element. After the element has been overwritten, name, description, and other element attributes can be locally modified and are not being updated through subsequent process module updates anymore. Element associations are still being updated, unless both the source and the target element of the association is overwritten.

Local modifications can be removed by using the “Restore” operation. After a restore, the original element is visible again and it will again be updated through process module updates.
